I'm currently wasting my time with a free little text-based RPG -
[link] .
It's quite funny and there is plenty of detail to explore, but I'm mainly caught in the storyline because of the post-apocalyptic setting. The setting is a mixture of steampunk and catastrophic dystopia - both of my favorite genres, finally united!
So, I went to explore the world map and was a little disappointed that it was so small. Then I thought, let's paint the pixels from screen to a tiny bitmap.
Then I took this small map and made a bigger one of it. I tried to put some depth in it by painting a heightmap.
Then came the outlines, the textures, several small details...
I thought of individual logos for all the cities and modelled the heightmap again, this time with all kinds of erosion. This time, the heightlines were at least plausible ^^
Finally, I started a route planning software to determine the fastest ways from one city to another - and hinted at those paths in the map, as well.
The effort that's been put in this transition maybe can be seen in this little previous/after-comparison...
[link]If you want to play with this map (which is highly recommended) - the grid overlay equals the displayed pixels in the game. In this fashion, you have a great overview and eye candy in one deal.
